Rider Names Great Horses

BEFORE I TALK about some of the great racehorses I have ridden in my 21 years as a jockey I want to tell you about one I think was a fake. His name was Ajax. I know that Ajax was a good horse, but in my opinion he was only a "meat-pie" champion.

I KNOW that this will start something, but if I have an opinion about a horse I'm entitled to express it. Already I can hear admirers of Ajax saying: “Poor old Darb. He’s getting childish;" or "How would Munro know, anyhow. He’s never ridden Ajax." Yes, yes, it’s true I never rode Ajax, but I rode against him several times and I think he was greatly over-rated. I found Ajax out in one race when I purposely put the acid test on him to try to show up the weakness I thought he had. Under fire,
