COACH STYLES 1950s — 1990s
By Tim Machin
Another very interesting book on coaches from Amberley, this one takes a look at how coach styles — changed from the traditional styling of the 1950s to themodern look of the 1990s. Most notable changes have been the under-floor engine chassis and the increase in length. Technology also played its part in helping to make styling more adventurous, and once motorway travel had begun in the 1960s, this called for bigger and longer coaches capable of cruising at higher speeds. Then of course we got the very popular Continental coach holidays which led to the executive and high-floor style of coaches being very much in demand. It was Volvo who after a slow start in the early 1970s, headed the influx of foreign chassis manufacturers and within 15 years, home-built coaches had become the minority.
