LICENCE TO THRILL

FUTURE Classics BUYING GUIDE

On the face of it, some 24 years after its launch the Honda S2000 still looks like an astonishingly good bet. Its revvy 2.0-litre unit is well proven and offers tantalisingly quick performance, while leather pews, a hi-tech digital dash and that evocative ‘engine start’ button inside set the scene for drivers eager to unleash those 240 horses via the rear wheels. Despite recent price hikes, the icing on the cake is that you can still pick one up for £8000, though you need to choose carefully.

In many respects, the S2000 can be considered as a grown-up MX-5; it shares the Mazda's no fuss, back to basics philosophy but has an added dose of sophistication and nearly double the power output. Incidentally, Honda threw the accumulated experience ofthrilling as you edge towards the red line, the short shifting six-speed ’box really coming into its own by then, and the grip afforded by the double wishbone chassis much appreciated. Weighing in at just 1260kg, performance was hasty, with 0-62mph being reached in just 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 150mph.
