Washouts and damage as freak autumn storms strike

STORMS Babet and Ciaran brought chaos to the British Isles and left their mark with flash flooding and fallen trees on heritage railways.

Staffordshire's Amerton Railway was closed on October 20/21 when the Amerton Brook burst its banks and flooded the surrounding fields and main station yard. Although the water level receded by the Saturday afternoon, the railway remained closed on the Sunday to let it reduce further and for inspections to be carried out.
