The Type 31 ‘Inspiration’ class frigates

NAVAL UPDATE

On Saturday 16 September Babcock International’s Rosyth shipyard near Edinburgh hosted a keel-laying ceremony to mark the formal start of the assembly of HMS Active, the second of five new Type 31 ‘Inspiration’ class frigates. To the sound of bagpipes, a specially-commissioned coin designed by a local schoolgirl was hammered under the ship’s keel. It will later be presented to Active’s commanding officer and crew when the ship is ready to sail.

Ordered in November 2019, the Type 31 frigates will replace the Type
