Alex Roddie finds a surprisingly adventurous day out on a local hill

LTHOUGH THEY RARELY attract walkers from further afield, Scotland’s ranges of lesser hills tend to be open secrets amongst locals. Whilst the Cairngorms or Blair Atholl feel busy on a sunny weekend, the Sidlaws – a modest range between Dundee and Perth – are unlikely to see any crowds. The highest point is Craigowl Hill at 455m, but many of the summits are lower than this and can be very quiet.
