Waiting alone backstage, I couldn’t wait to praise my daughter.

Chloe, then 15, had busted out her best dance moves for an annual competition in town.

She’d been dancing since she was three and I knew she had a superstar quality.

So I wasn’t surprised when a leaflet was thrust into my hand as I waited for her to finish.

‘What’s this?’ I asked.

With a smile, the woman introduced herself as a member of the rotary club.

‘We’re running a local pageant,’ she explained.
