The cocktail watch conjures up images of decadent parties, smoky jazz clubs and hedonistic flapper girls. There’s no strict definition of what constitutes a cocktail watch, explains Charlotte Peel, jewellery specialist at Lyon & Turnbull, but essentially, they’re a dressier, more glamorous wristwatch, originally designed to be worn with an evening dress. And although they are often associated with the 1920s and 30s, they continued to be made later into the 20th century. Today high-class jewellers such as Cartier and Bulgari make lavish, gemstudded ladies’ watches, although they’re not marketed specifically as cocktail watches.
