Having been born in Chester but raised in North Wales, how close were you to playing for Wales instead of England?

A rule came in when I was 24 saying that you could represent a country if you’d attended a school there for five or more years. I’d also played for Wales’ schoolboys, but I’d been in the England squad by the time this new rule started – it was never an option.

How did you end up at Manchester United, as a childhood fan of the club?

I didn’t actually take up football properly until I was eight or nine. I initially went on trial at Wrexham,I wasn’t good enough for United. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were in front of me and Jonny Evans was climbing up the ranks. I wasn’t at their level.
