CASTE ASPERSIONS

Amid the clamour for a caste census, Opposition leaders are attacking Prime’s OBC credentials. On November 4, Janata Dal (United) national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh called Modi a fraud saying he is not an OBC. The same day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asked why Modi identifies as OBC when he considers ‘poor’ the only caste in the country. Earlier, in October, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar claimed Modi allegedly got his caste—the Modh-Ganchi—included in the OBC list in 2002 when he was Gujarat CM. It was the social welfare department of the then Congress state government, though, that had passed a notification in July 1994, announcing 36 castes, including Modh-Ghanchis, as OBC.
