Iceland Olympics
The 11th Olympic Summer Games were held in London from 29 July until 14 August 1948, writes Christer Brunström.
The event was hugely popular, reportedly attracting over one million spectators. King George VI opened the games and the ceremony could be watched on television. 59 nations took part in the games, with Wembley Stadium as its main venue. The participants competed in 20 different sports, with the US athletes obtaining the largest number of medals.
The tiny nation of Iceland sent a delegation of 17 men and just three women. They competed in swimming and athletics but they had to return home without any medals – no
