’53 BARNDOOR PICK-UP

Only recently, I found myself chatting to someone about old VWs and explaining how I’d go about stripping off an older respray to expose the original paint underneath. They were in the make-it-like-new camp of the classic car world and this was a mind-blowing concept to them.

I get it. The vast majority of cars we, and most automotive magazines, have featured over the years are pristine examples. Likewise, most of the cars at The VolksWorld Show are incredible restorations, and the pinnacle of aspiration for many.

Me, though, I’ve always gravitated towards cars that have a bit of wear and tear.

I still remember showing my mum the pictures on the roll of film I had developed from the first Bug Jam I made it to – in 1991, aged 16 – and trying to explain why all the cars I’d photographed had primer spots and dull old paint. In fairness, I couldn’t explain
