If Lyndon’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the man behind ‘Fubar’, the ’64 Cal Look Bug that was our cover star in August 2020. We described that car as an exercise in perfection, and it is. So much so, it’s also an exercise in building a car that will never be driven. And Lyndon’s okay with that.
So, what does the man who built a car too good to drive, drive? The answer is this delightful Jungle Green ’56 Oval.
Though the birth certificate confirms the car was originally delivered to Switzerland, it spent most of its life in Sweden, and was imported into the UK by Owen Warlow before Lyndon bought it from him in 2004, just after he’d finished the first rebuild of his ’64. It was pretty typical of the type – largely original, a nice export cloth interior, solid and with a mediocre external repaint done some years earlier. It cost £2,500.
“There’s always that devil / angel on my shoulder thing, but I had one car in the garage that wasn’t very useable and didn’t want to just build something else I wasn’t going to use,” remembers Lyndon.
