SAILFISH (THE FAST)
The Malaysian Sailfish fishery is well known. Despite poorly policed fishing activities in the region, the catch & release mantra seems to have sunk in over the decades making the fishing somewhat reliable.
Sailfish are targeted mainly along Malaysia’s east coast and typically between March and October. The fish are there all year round, however monsoon season between November and February makes it a little too sporty to be out on the water. I like planning blue water trips around moon cycles; congregation of bait, big fish eat little fish. You know the drill. However, I have caught them outside of these times too. Kuala Rompin gets the attention as the hotspot, but you can access the same fishing grounds from Nenasi, Kuantan, Merchong and Pekan. The 50-60kg brutes caught in decades past are becoming scarce. Average fish are now 15-35kg and 50kg specimens the outliers.
