It’s no secret that money is tight for most in 2023. With many pressures on our purse-strings, surveys show that 21% of us have replaced professional beauty treatments with DIY alternatives. This is a trend that’s set to continue: data suggests a further 19% of us are planning to follow suit as we head into 2024.
But, from at-home hair colour to gel manis, DIY treatments are not without their risks. Those who have attempted to cut in a fringe will know that, while hairdressers make it look easy, it’s not so simple after all. And there’s our healthy and safety to consider too.
‘There are many potential risks depending on your chosen treatment, including allergic reactions, scarring, infections and bruising,’ says Dr Angela Tewari, consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson.
