THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF DELOS, GREECE

According to Greek mythology, Delos is the legendary birthplace of the god Apollo and goddess Artemis, which meant the island was highly revered from ancient times. In the 5th century BC, Delos became the base of the First Athenian League and of its common treasury, until Pericles moved it to Athens in 454 BC. The Athenians held Delia festivals on Delos and made it a leading panhellenic sanctuary. After it was declared a free port by the Romans, Delos became a major trading hub until its sack by Mithridates, king of Pontus in 88 BC.
