TRAVEL GETAWAY
EVERY TIME WE TRAVEL to Brixham, in Devon, it's a lovely reminder of my family holidays back in the 1950s and 1960s, when we used to drive down to Brixham from our home in Norfolk.
In those days, the journey was normally a two-day drive, including an overnight stop spent in a quiet side road, with Mum and Dad sleeping in the car and my brother and I trying to sleep in a small tent pitched on a grassy verge, before moving on to the holiday camp at St Mary's Bay.
These days, though, Elaine and I enjoy rather more in the way of comfort in our modern two-berth tourer!
On our latest trip, we were staying at Hillhead Caravan & Motorhome Club Site, a couple of miles south-west of Brixham. The sun shone for most of the time we were there and we made the most of it, exploring new areas and revisiting some of our favourite haunts.
Having set up our outfit, we strolled around the site to get our bearings and found that some of the pitches have lovely sea views, while others look out over the rolling countryside. Somewhat unusually for a Club site, there is a bar, a restaurant and an outdoor pool – we enjoyed a cold beer followed by a fish and chip supper.
