The imposition of maximum stint length was implemented for the Qatar Grand Prix after Pirelli found a safety issue ahead of qualifying. Despite changing the track limit at corners at which constant striking of a kerb was leading to lacerations in the sidewalls, potentially leading to failure, Pirelli mandated a maximum of 18 laps on a set of tyres to reduce risk.
