Mecum Auction, Monterey

It was a year for Ferraris at Mecum’s annual Monterey auction, with the cars of Maranello claiming seven of the top ten spots. In fact, if the high bids on three Ferraris offered with reserve had been accepted, it would have been a clean sweep. That’s quite a change from 2022, when seven marques were represented among the top ten.

Total sales were a reported $45 million, down from $52.1 million in 2022, and a record $57.4 million in 2021. By our unofficial count, Mecum offered a total of 571 cars, trucks, and motorcycles during its three-day sale, up from 454 in 2022. The sell-through rate dipped to 53.6 percent from last year’s 64.5 percent, while the average sale also declined, from $179,448 to $147,058—again, these are our calculations. Of course, that average is heavily weighted by the top end of the catalog.

Six lots sold for more than $1 million, led by a 3,417-mile 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C Alloy Berlinetta (Lot F84) at $3,410,000. The top American car, a 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona (Lot S128), was eighth on the list, at $880,000. For the bargain hunter, an automatic-equipped 1953 Nash Rambler Country Club sold for $5,500.
