Hill Top, near Hawkshead

Loved the world over for her children’s tales and illustrations about naughty animals like Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck, it’s well known that British author Beatrix Potter took inspiration for her works from the beauty and nature of the Lake District.

Having spent her summer holidays with her family in the area, Potter bought Hill Top, an idyllic 17th-century stone cottage near Hawkshead, in 1905 with the royalties from her first few books. The house is now a time capsule of the author’s life, preserved as it would have been when
