6 Steps to Scandinavian Research Success

Despite popular belief, Vikings never wore horned helmets. Christians added horns to depictions of Vikings, considered pagans, to lend a barbarian look.

1 START AT HOME.

Begin with the most-recent person about whom you have information, then work back to previous generations. Look, in particular for the names of parents (including mothers’ maiden names) and their residence, as well as any mention of a Scandinavian immigrant ancestor and their hometown.

2 SEARCH FOR BIRTHS IN SCANDINAVIAN CHURCH PARISH RECORDS.

Search for the immigrant ancestor’s birth, as well as the births of any siblings. You may find siblings who have the same given name; if a child died at birth or in infancy, the parents might give the same name to the next child.
