Winter warmer

SIMON LESTER’S article was an utter pleasure to peruse (‘Conkering heroes’, October 11). I humbly offer to contribute further trivia: chestnuts make excellent natural pocket warmers. They demonstrate excellent heat-retaining properties, providing long-lasting warmth. The clever use of chestnuts as hand warmers was practical during earlier times when modern heating solutions were unavailable. Shepherds could rely on roasted chestnuts for a portable source of warmth for their hands or even as makeshift bed warmers. Caroline Strannhage, Fife
