943 was a pivotal year for the Allies, who after defeating Axis forces in North Africa in the spring, turned to the invasion and liberation of recounts the battle for Italy, both at the operation level, as well as the experiences of the men on the ground. On page 24 he describes how the under-resourced invasion force faced a gruelling and bloody slog against determined German defenders.
