AVALANCHES seem statistically unlikely to your average hill-goer, accounting for only 2% of Scottish Mountain Rescue call outs over a 30-year period, according to a 2010 survey by Bob Sharp and Dave Whalley. So, it’s understandable if you can’t relate to the likelihood of being avalanched. But despite the low likelihood of being avalanched, the consequences are high should you be involved.
1 AVALANCHES DON’T NEED TO BE BIG TO BE DANGEROUS
There are several misconceptions around the nature of avalanches, and the way in which they can cause harm, that might make you feel as though they happen to other people – not us. Firstly, the UK’s rapidly changing weather and the transient nature of the avalanche hazard makes it difficult to observe avalanches. Secondly, the idea that avalanches only
