AVALANCHES seem statistically unlikely to your average hill-goer, accounting for only 2% of Scottish Mountain Rescue call outs over a 30-year period, according to a 2010 survey by Bob Sharp and Dave Whalley. So, it’s understandable if you can’t relate to the likelihood of being avalanched. But despite the low likelihood of being avalanched, the consequences are high should you be involved.
