Stepping on to the plane, I took one last look at the mountains behind me. This country is beautiful, I thought. But I can’t wait to be home.

I’d spent the last eight months in Afghanistan serving in the Australian Army as a rifleman.

Enlisting at age 19, it’d been tough leaving behind my beautiful girlfriend, Elisa, then 19, my mum Tracey, my dad Peter, and my brother Kane, 15.

But I felt proud to be representing my country.
