MY GUY
I really enjoyed your feature on the Guy mixer in June’s edition. In June 1971 I signed up with Redland Innes Gravel of Woolmer Green Hertfordshire as an owner driver with a Guy Big J6 mixer, plated at 20 tons.
This unit had the AEC 505 engine and a five-speed direct gearbox coupled with an axle ratio of 7.18:1 This was a Guy chassis tailored to the rapidly expanding ready mixed industry. A good proportion of the depots were urban based and annual mileage was not very high and distance travelled per journey averaged about five or six miles.
This specification allowed deliveries to be made in quite demanding site conditions in an era when concrete pumps were very scarce and big 4x4 dumpers were almost unheard of.
Unlike the Guy featured in the article my Guy performed brilliantly, the engine had one head gasket in five years
