MATH QUESTION

I really enjoyed the articles on Otto Lilienthal’s gliders and Igo Etrich’s dove aircraft in the Summer 2023 issue. What fascinated me the most was that apparently the designs were derived by their observations and gut feelings. For all practical purposes these were experimental gliders and aircraft. Lilienthal and Etrich must have understood center of gravity, or they would have crashed at takeoff. I wonder if anyone knows at what period
