Comparing brushes

Sable brushes are beautiful, soft, exquisitely made and are rather special. They are to be treasured and looked after. They are worth having in your stable of brushes. A stable of sable is an ambition of mine. But synthetic brushes are also in my stable and this article is an attempt to analyse the difference between the two. The brushes differ basically in their ability to hold water and to bend. Usually you would use a greater selection of brushes, but for the following demonstrations one of each type of brush was used separately for each painting – one sable and one synthetic.
