I APPRECIATED the positive comments made by Town Mouse (October 4) about the inclusive nature of a Quaker marriage certificate. In our romantic naivety, we assumed my husband’s formidable aunt would be thrilled to be at our wedding. How we chuckle as we recall her scathing comment—she branded our simple Quaker ceremony ‘a poor sort of a do’!
Nowadays, so many marrying couples are caught up in a competitive spiral of lavishness. I’d like to think that, if Auntie had lived to see the outrageous results of this modern nuptial freedom, she would have been more impressed with our grounded minimalism.
