he National Archives (TNA) at Kew is seeking volunteers to transcribe 19thcentury. The British Army description and succession books cover officers, noncommissioned officers and other ranks. They include details of enlistment, appointments (promotions), discharges or deaths, physical descriptions and genealogical information. Dr Will Butler, head of military records at TNA, said, “They include such a wealth of personal information, similar to what you would find in an early 20th century or First World War service record - names, places of birth, heights, weights [and] occupations before joining the armed forces.” The transcriptions will be added to TNA's online catalogue Discovery.
