Learning objectives

■ How to make simple wood engravings
■ Understand the materials and tools you will need
■ Practise printing methods at home

You will need

• A drawing you want to turn into a print
• Tracing paper
• Tracedown or white carbon paper
• White gouache paint for painting over the areas marked for cutting (optional)
• A piece of prepared boxwood
• Two or three wood engraving tools
• Sepia ink
• Relief printing inks
• A small roller
• A sheet of glass or similar on which to roll out the ink
• Japanese paper
• A teaspoon or similar tool for burnishing
