THE transfer of more Class 707s to Southeastern in recent weeks has led to further Class 465 and 466 electric multiple units being taken out of service and sent away to Harry Needle Railroad Company’s Worksop site for storage.
The ‘707s’, have been given the City Beam brand by Southeastern, and are replacing the Metro-Cammell built Class 465/9 and ‘466’ EMUs, that, unlike the York-built ‘465/0’ and ‘465/1’ fleets which received new Hitachi equipment, retain their original traction packages that are now over 30 years old.
During September, 12 sets were taken from Gillingham to Worksop yard by Rail Operations Group No. 37884 Cepheus, details below:
September 4 – 465918, 466033
September 7 – 465905, 466013
September 15 – 465933, 466001
September 18 – 465931, 466017
September 21 – 465920, 466009
September 28 – 465921, 466005
Already in store at Worksop are Nos. 465241/242/247, 466004/010/016/024/043, while Nos. 465236-240/243-246/248-250 are at Ely Papworth and No. 465235 is at Wabtec, Doncaster.
Recent transfers of Class 707s between South Western Railway and Southeastern have been Nos. 707018/019, which ran from Waterloo to Gillingham on September 2, and Nos. 707020/021, which arrived at Grove Park in the early hours of September 16. These moves leave just six sets with SWR (Nos. 707015-017/022/024/030), of which Nos. 707015/016 were stopped in late September to be prepared for transfer.
