Annie Sloan CBE, Annie Sloan

‘Whether Delftware or Ming dynasty Chinese porcelain, my favourite way to display blue-and-white ceramics is with a strong contrast. A cobalt blue such as my Napoleonic Blue will draw the eye and emphasise the crisp contrast of the whites and the beauty of the blue in the pattern. I’m also not averse to using warm and spicy shades that highlight the blue’s cool crispness. Carnaby Yellow (2) is a turmeric spiced yellow with real earthiness; personality-wise, it’s the exact opposite of a crisp white and cobalt.

‘For pale plaster pieces, I love pairing with a fresh blue, like It highlights the white, making plaster look fresh (11) or warm, faded-parchment Both colours were formulated to serve as understudies to brighter, bolder colour and they’ll let antique furniture do the talking, without competing for attention.’
