GET GROWING HARROGATE FLOWER SHOW
Set within the grounds of the picturesque 18th century Newby Hall, the show featured plenty to inspire even the most casual gardener. The autumn show is always an especially, with late season abundance always on proud display. This is always the case in the Incredible Edible pavilion, where veg growers battle it out to grow the heaviest, longest, and most perfectly formed produce: this year was no exception, with a near 9kg monster of an onion outweighing all others to take home a new National Onion Championship record. It wasn't only the record breakers that fired our imagination; the classic crime fiction themed floral displays, set within the opulent surroundings of Newby Hall's reception rooms, showed just how decorative vegetables can be, with aubergines, chestnuts, crab apples and chillies used to great effect among the sunflowers and dahlias. We were also mightily impressed with the growing skills of some famous names, with Hercule Poirot's prize marrow causing particular delight. Monsieur Poirot, if you're reading – bravo!
