JUDGING CRITERIA

Only vehicles that the majority of the CAR editorial team have driven

We factor in the findings of road tests and driving impressions we’ve published up until this November issue. That said, it’s always intriguing to note what products are on the horizon that could shake up next year’s results…

Ranges, not individual models

Apart from the Budget- and Performance-car segments, we consider an entire range, not merely one particular derivative per line-up. For your benefit, we’ve then listed our favourite variant within the winning range.

While, for example, it may appear odd to have aToyota Fortuner and a Nissan X-Trail gunning for the same award, bear in mind that we measure cars against their direct rivals in their classes and then rule on their relative levels of excellence.

We consider all the facts

While we evaluate packaging, personality and driveability in each category, more than ever, the focus is on value for money and the potential ownership experience.

01 BUDGET CAR (UNDER R230 000)

Criteria: Any model that costs R230 000 or less, regardless of size or body shape. Value, cost of ownership, efficiency and safety features are key.

Worth a mention: Toyota Vitz. From R189 900. The spiritual successor to the Tazz. Toyota, once again, focuses on entry-level value.

WINNER

SUZUKI SWIFT 1,2 GL

Price: R218 900

The Swift 1,2 GL comes equipped with two air bags, ABS with EBD, stability control, electric windows, rear park-distance control, air-con and ISOFIX child-seat mountings as standard. Sure, there are sacrifices: owners have to shell out more money for a service plan that extends beyond the standard two-year/30 000 km and the infotainment unit lacks a touchscreen interface. The cabin has swathes of hard plastic, but fit and finish are good, interior space is excellent front and rear considering the vehicle’s compact size, and it rides with respectable composure while handling assuredly. Finding a balance between value for money, packaging and safety items, nothing in this segment can touch the Swift GL. The brand’s proven 1,2-litre engine
