Get away for… THE WEEKEND!

Weekend Break TRAVEL

I'd been invited, at short notice, to a work conference in Wantage. Given the venue was a five-hour round trip from our home in East Sussex, we'd decided to make a weekend of it.

An internet search for the nearest campsite came up with the delightfully named Crowmarsh Gifford. The Bridge Villa Camping and Caravan Park was a perfectly feasible 15-mile drive to the conference, and just a short stroll from the River Thames.

The family-run site couldn't have been more welcoming. When we explained that we were unfamiliar with the area, they plied us with information and recommended some leaflets about local walks. We chose A Walk around Wallingford's History, and crossed Wallingford Bridge to explore this lovely little town.

Wallingford may be familiar to some as one of the locations for the TV series, Midsomer Murders. But Wallingford has an important place in national history, long preceding television. In fact, it even gets a mention in the Magna Carta in 1215.
