Copying songs from audio CDs

Before 1 October 2014, it was illegal to copy the contents of a CD in the UK, even though you could download legitimate software for that purpose, such as Apple iTunes. The law changed in the ‘Copyright and Rights in Performances Regulations 2014’ (www.snipca.com/47712), which stated that “the making of a copy of a work by an individual does not infringe copyright” provided the copy is for private use.

However, in July 2015 – following a complaint by the British music industry – the High Court overturned the new regulation to make it once again illegal to rip audio CDs (), and this remains the law.
