A generation came to know Sir Michael Gambon, who has died at the age of 82, as Professor Albus Dumbledore,films. He was passed the wand after Richard Harris, the first to play Hogwarts’ hirsute headmaster, died. The franchise was – by his own admission – the least demanding of his acting career, which stretched back to 1962. On stage he was “Gambon the Great”, as Sir Ralph Richardson named him, rattling the rafters of London’s theatres with his resounding voice in plays by Shakespeare, Pinter, Beckett, Brecht and more.
