Bake from Scratch

Life is Better with Buttermilk

The kitchen has always been an enchanting space for Sam. She recalls, as a child, watching her mother whip up batches of chocolate chip cookies as she eagerly waited for the promise of licking dough-covered beaters. Her love of baking developed and transformed into the beloved blog Buttermilk by Sam.

Sam’s baking journey began as a teenager. “I made my first chocolate cake when I was 16 years old. It was a light, tender, and delicious buttermilk chocolate cake that became the cake requested by my family for birthdays. I still make that recipe today, and I love it dearly.”

Her passion for baking grew more profound when she went away to Colorado State University to study politics. “I began baking for social events—baking countless blueberry muffins for girls’ night and beautiful cakes for department events. There were these chocolate chip cookies I’d make with margarine and milk chocolate that immediately found a dedicated fan base among friends,” she shares.

“While in school, one of my. Late at night, I found myself in the back of the kitchen experimenting and creating new flavors for the café. It wasn’t until after I received my graduate degree from Georgetown University that I began baking more intently and attempting to develop my own recipes. As I got older and gained more confidence in my baking abilities, I’d try changing a few crucial ingredients or steps in a recipe or not following one at all. This is the part of baking I really fell in love with—pushing boundaries to see what I could do differently to get a surprising, exciting result.”
