SWEET SAUVIE

It’s no secret that the biggest roadblock for folks looking to either get into waterfowl hunting or continue the pursuit is access. Hunting rights on private land can be tough to come by. Leases, if available, aren’t exactly inexpensive. And not everyone has an 18-foot War Eagle with a 40-horse surface-drive motor.

Challenging? Perhaps. Impossible? Absolutely not, especially for those living within an hour or two of Sauvie Island, just north of Portland, Ore. A stopping point for Canada geese, mallards, wigeons, pintails and many species of diving ducks, Sauvie Island is truly a waterfowler’s buffet.
