In 1817 the English antiquary Anthony Aufrère published a hefty, two-volume edition of the papers of his wife’s greatgrandfather. This might sound rather dull - at best - but the interest of such projects is always dependent on who, exactly, the ancestor in question was. In this case, it was a previously enigmatic Scottish politician, George Lockhart of Carnwath (1681?-1731).
