omehow we have reached the November issue already, the issue that traditionally triggers in me a feeling that my garden might be lacking in the autumn colour department. It in West Sussex, with its historic collection of trees aglow with their turning autumnal foliage, and in Oxfordshire, where Lord Michael Heseltine has planted a diverse arboretum of colourful trees, one of the country’s finest. Not to mention, where the hues of falling leaves are joined by a dazzling array of late-flowering plants. Last issue I mentioned how autumn will always be second to spring in terms of my favourite season, but it’s dawned on me that my planting mirrors this bias. I’m dangerously good at ordering spring bulbs, but not so good at remembering to plant things for this time of year. Luckily, there’s plenty of inspiration in this issue to put that right, so maybe this time next year that familiar feeling will be alleviated!
