Battery-electric boost

THE Ffestiniog Railway has bought two double ended 14-ton four-wheel battery-electric locos which were employed by Costain on the Tideway Tunnel Project in London.

The acquisition was a rapid decision made when the FR learned the 10-year old locos could be secured for their scrap value of £12,000.

The locos were driven to the bottom of the tunnel shaft from which they were recovered so appear to be in reasonable condition, although they will need to be regauged from their present 750mm gauge to 600mm. The deal included six battery packs (battery packs are presently not fitted to either loco), four chargers and some spare wheelsets.
