Black backgrounds add drama and depth to images, and they can work across multiple genres of photography. But did you know that you don’t actually need a black backdrop to create an image with a black background? In this masterclass I’m going to show you how to create a black background in a number of different situations. And, as with all photography, it all comes down to light.
DYNAMIC RANGE
A quick note on dynamic range, which is the tonal range from pure white to pure black in an image. Some cameras can record a greater dynamic range than others (as you might expect, this is often down to the price of a camera), but they’re nowhere near as good as our eyes. So, when it comes to creating a black background in photos, a camera’s lack of dynamic range can actually be taken advantage of to create this look.
