Love it or hate it

IN his excellent column, David Profumo refers to a ‘nice myth’ that Marmite acts as a mosquito repellent (Notebook, August 30). Many years ago, the actress Eileen Atkins travelled up the Amazon and had been advised to take brewer’s yeast tablets in advance of her trip to ward off mosquitos. Apparently, it worked!

As brewer’s yeast is the base material in Marmite (and we love Marmite), we took the risk of travelling many times on the upper Mississippi in north Iowa, relying on the benefits of Marmite to ward off the mosquitos, as our American friends emptied cans of ‘Off!’ over themselves. We managed to stay completely clear
