ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA (1976-1990)

When it comes to unorthodox luxury cars there are few that can rival the wedge-shaped Aston Martin Lagonda Series 2. Wild to look at and technically ambitious for the Newport Pagnell firm, the Lagonda was the work of William Towns, the former Rover designer who joined Aston Martin in 1966 in a newly created role as head of design. Towns quickly gained respect for his DBS coupe, picked to enter production over a rival sketch from established Italian outfit and Aston’s previous ‘go to’ design team, Touring of Milan.

Towns was a fan of the wedge aesthetic and the classic 1970s “folded paper” style, but he initially adapted his DBS design, stretching it to create a one-off luxury four-door saloon for the personal use of Aston owner David Brown in 1969. It was to be another five years before the Lagonda
