WRESTLING CHAMPION

Freestyle wrestler Zhang Qi won a gold medal for China in the women’s 59-kg competition at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, on September 19.

Zhang defeated Yulia Tkach of Ukraine 4-1 to claim the title. Zhang’s gold medal was China’s first at the championships, which took place from September 16 to 24.

Born in Baishan City in Jilin Province in 1998, Zhang was trained as a runner as a teenager and later was chosen to train in wrestling at the provincial sports school. In 2016, she was selected to join the national wrestling team.
