THE MOMENT THAT any Ferrari 250 GTO is sold is always significant. It’s a rare occurrence and, even though most private sales remain shrouded in mystery – the last high-profile semi-public sale was of the Tour de France winner, sold for around $70m in 2018 – those offered via auction offer a real glimpse into how the market continues to evolve.

RM Sotheby’s last sold a GTO at Monterey in 2018, where the later-bodied example made $48.4m. Before that was an earlier-bodied example sold by Bonhams in 2014 for $38.1m.
