MY FASCINATION with interesting cars goes back to the late ’50s in Farnham, Surrey. Many classic car buffs will have heard of the Tourist Trophy Garage, where Mike Hawthorn’s family sold Ferraris; well, the Goddard family owned the town’s Station Garage and its specialities were petrol, repairs and taxis. Hanging around the workshops as a youngster and restoring my first car – a 1938 Austin – with my father sparked an interest.
I then drove the old Austin to Stuttgart on a working vacation, much to the locals’ amusement. However, I soon realised that none of the engineering moondust had come my way, so I chose to study photography at Harrow School have a natural talent for.
