Uncertain future

Not since the end of World War I and the foundation of the Republic of Ireland has the future of the United Kingdom seemed so uncertain. It's easy to imagine a near future in which Scotland has gone it alone, Northern Ireland is in the midst of a border poll, and – its people considering what life tied to England might be like without the counterweights of the other home nations – Wales is moving towards independence or, at the very least, greater devolution.

Equally, it's just as possible that, given time, the current tensions – rooted in, among other factors, Brexit, economic inequality and different regional identities – will fade.
